FoBNR Conservation Volunteer Day

March 27 @ 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Join the Friends of Berrylands Nature Reserve for another of our regular “last Wednesday of the month” conservation volunteer session.

PLEASE NOTE:
In a change to our usual arrangements we are asking volunteers to bring their own gloves and tools this time, if they are able to do so.
If you don’t have your own we should have a few spares, but numbers will be limited.
We hope this will be a one off request, and are looking at options to resolve this before future sessions.
Please note any tools brought by volunteers will NOT be covered by our insurance policy, so bringing them would be at volunteers own risk should they get lost or damaged, and for that reason we wouldn’t suggest bringing them to share, as generous as that would be.

The session will run from 10am to 2pm, meeting as usual outside of Berrylands Scout Hut on Sterling Walk.
Any help is always much appreciated, whether you can join us for an hour or two, or even the whole day.

At our last volunteer session, before our first AGM, we spent the morning spreading woodchip over some of the main paths through the nature reserve, trying to make them a bit more passable without the necessity for wellies!
We have had another load of woodchip delivered by council green spaces contractor idVerde so will be continuing this work to make the paths more usable.

We have also spotted a few patches of the invasive species variagated yellow archangel in areas of the woodland which we are planning to tackle. This is something we have been trying to keep on top of, with the hopes of eventually eradicating it completely from the site.

If you have a wheelbarrow and/or shovel, to help with the woodchip, or a hand fork or hand trowel to use for digging up archangel, that would be really helpful.
Also don’t forget your gardening gloves if you have any.

Rosa’s Cafe located on Alexandra Drive has very generously offered to donate some soup to keep us all going when we take a break. Last time we had some of their soup at one of our sessions it was delicious, so it’s worth coming along for that alone!
There will also be hot drinks and biscuits too.

Given the time of year it may well be cold (although hopefully not wet, but you never know) so please wear appropriate clothing. Lots of the paths in certain areas of the nature reserve are also quite muddy at the moment (hence the woodchip!) so sturdy footwear is a must, and wellies would probably be advisable.

Hope to see you there!
